Hardee’s….Flame it Up…

The first restaurant of Hardee’s was opened in Greenville, North Carolina on September 9, 1960 by Wilbur Hardee with eye catching manly menu items, including the Huskee. Hardee’s has grown to become the fourth largest American fast food chain (together with sibling Carl’s Jr.) by franchising and to a lesser extent, by acquiring other restaurant chains. It also opened units in West Germany (Hardee’s Schnellrast) and Australia in conjucntion with Kellogg’s in late 1960s and early 1970s.

Many original Hardee’s were builts with a hexagonal style building with a pointed roof and for a short period, Hardee’s hamburgers were actually hexagonal keeping with that theme. The 1960’s menu included Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Fries, Apple Turnovers, Milk, Coffee, Coke, Pepsi, Root Beer and Orange and Milkshakes. The burgers were famous for a distinctive “flame-broiled” taste thanks to the “charco-broling”, using heated “char-rocks” that caused the fat content dripping off the cooking beef to ignite.

Over the years, Hardee’s introduced numerous specialities on its menu like beef sandwiches and fried chicken items in addition to Turkey Burgers, Mushroom Burgers, Tenyaki Burgers and Cheeseburgers. Today Hardee’s also offers a range of breakfast meals, Low-carb content burgers, kids’ meals along with the specialty Monster ThickBurger, made of a sesame-seed bun, mayonnaise, bacon, cheese, butter falovred shortening and two patties of ground beef made from Angus cattle for a total of 300g uncooked meat.
